How to Get Blood Stains Out of Your Upholstery

Accidents occur. Some result in bloodstains on the clothes, bed linens, carpet, and upholstery. These stains should be removed promptly, otherwise, it could leave a permanent stain on these surfaces. Surely, you wouldn’t want that to happen on your prized leather sofa, would you?

As a fabric and leather and fabric sofa cleaning service provider in Singapore, we are sharing with you some tips on how to get blood stains out of your upholstery.

How to Remove Blood Stains From Your Upholstery

The success in removing blood stains from upholstery is a matter of removing the stains as soon as possible. But, before trying out any of the following methods, be sure to test the stain-removing solution on an area that will not be seen to make sure that you will not cause damage anywhere that is most visible.

Step 1: Using a clean, dry, cloth, soak up as much of the stain as soon as possible to keep the blood from getting deeper into the upholstery.

Step 2: Afterwards, blot cold water with a clean, dry cloth directly onto the stain to further remove blood from the upholstery. Do not use warm water as it can help set the stain faster.

Step 3: Soak a clean, dry cloth with a few drops of hydrogen peroxide and blot it onto the stain. This should cause a reaction with the blood and will start to foam. Continue blotting until the foam subsides.

Step 4: Rinse the stained area by soaking a clean cloth with cold water. Wipe it in a circular motion and make sure not to scrub the upholstery.

Step 5: If the stain is visible, repeat steps 3 and 4 until the stain has disappeared. Then, you will want to place a dry cloth on the area to soak up the excess moisture.

Here’s Another Technique to Try: Dishwashing Liquid

For carpets and upholstery that is not colour-safe with hydrogen peroxide, you can try using a dishwashing liquid:

Mix one tablespoon of dish detergent with two cups of cold water. Then, dab the stain with the solution until it disappears. Sponge again with cold water to rinse and pat dry.

These cleaning solutions and techniques are also recommended for treating curtains, carpets and other upholstery. Make sure to not overwet the fabric as it can cause moisture that can result in more problems—mould and mildew growth, for instance. But, if after all these efforts the stain still doesn’t budge, you will need a more stain-fighting power that is professional upholstery cleaning services.
